A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
I am aware of two Anne Hathaways, the wife of William Shakespeare and the current superstar actress. This post will address the physical health habits of today’s Anne Hathaway. She is a beautiful lady who stays in shape, so I thought she might have secrets to share. As for the Anne Hathaway who married William Shakespeare in 1582, I have often wondered if I could possibly be related to her. It’s not impossible – lol.
Anne Hathaway, now 42 years of age, was born in Brooklyn. Her mother was an actress, her father a labor attorney. Anne began acting in high school and made her breakthrough with “The Princess Diaries” in 2001. At this point, her films have grossed over $6.8 billion worldwide.

Anne had experienced depression as a teenager and overcame it without medication. She has smoked and quit. She has also given up alcohol.
ANNE’S 10 RULES FOR STAYING FIT
Women’s Health gives us the 10 things that Anne considers the basis of her fitness routine:
- Work out in the morning. Anne likes the endorphin boost of an early workout, which sets up a happy day for her. She also likes to get the workout out of the way so that she has the rest of the day for other pursuits. I personally identify with this and always do my workouts before breakfast in the morning.
- Play music. Anne agrees with most of us that music is motivational and that workouts can sometimes be tedious without music. I agree and always play music when on my treadmill.
- Make warmups fun. Stretches are often used in warmups, sometimes even static stretches. Cold static stretches are never healthy. Anne prefers dancing and other dynamic forms for her warmups.
- Go for a quick confidence boost. It is well known that quick fixes are not our best forms of improving ourselves physically, but Anne often goes all out in her routines to increase her confidence for an upcoming movie role. She is then more aware of her posture when her muscles are contracting or even when they are sore.
- Always rest. Rest days are crucial for muscle gains and fitness in general. Anne’s trainers make sure that she takes at least one day off per week in her training.
- Switch up your surroundings. Anne and her trainers strongly believe that outdoor walks are necessary to break up the possible monotony of indoor workouts. I understand this and even take outdoor walks in addition to treadmill routines, just for the fresh air.
- Stack up on snacks. Anne is nutrition-knowledgeable and does not want to be hungry during a lengthy workout. She likes popcorn – cheap and tasty.
- Incorporate all kinds of training. Those of us who may not be bodybuilders or athletes with specific fitness goals are usually interested in routines that combine cardio with strength training. Anne adheres to this idea as well. She does cardio, works her core and does circuit training. She uses resistance tools to build her strength and especially likes to work her arms. She wants to look good at the Oscars!
- Motherhood puts things into perspective. After giving birth, Anne feels that exercise is easier. She may be comparing workouts with delivering a baby.
- Do what feels good. Anne doesn’t try to adopt habits that don’t suit her. She says she is not a “natural wellness warrior”. She makes it to yoga classes 3 or 4 times a week and doesn’t feel that she needs to “go to longevity conventions or take crystal baths”.
ANNE’S NUTRITION
Anne often must change her body to fit a screen role. For example, she played the role of Fantine, who was stricken with tuberculosis. Anne needed to lose 27 pounds to be authentic in the role. She underwent a detoxifying cleanse and then a diet of oatmeal paste to be able to look gaunt.
Such changes show her dedication to cinematic excellence.
Her daily diet when not changing her body for a role consists of the following:
- Balanced meals. Anne eats a variety of foods – lean proteins, like chicken, fish and legumes, plenty of vegetables and whole grains.
- Plant-based focus. She is now incorporating more plant-based meals into her diet, for health and ethical reasons.
- Hydration. She drinks plenty of water during the day.
- Snacks. She might choose fruits, nuts or healthy smoothies.
- Moderation. Anne doesn’t adhere to dietary restirctions and enjoys occasional treats.
A typical meal day for Anne may be oatmeal for breakfast, a salad with grilled chicken for lunch and a vegetable stir-fry with quinoa for dinner. She may incude healthy snacks during the day also.
