SCARLETT JOHANSSON’S FITNESS & SKIN CARE

A BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Scarlett Ingrid Johansson was born in New York City on November 22, 1984. She has citizenship in the United States and Denmark. Her father was originally from Denmark.

At age 9, she had minor movie roles as the daughter of John Ritter and later of Sean Connery. She kept busy as a child actress and shifted to adult roles in 2003 in the movie Lost in Translation. In 1998, she co starred with Robert Redford in The Horse Whisperer.

She became the world’s highest paid actress in 2018 and 2019. Her films have grossed over $15.4 billion worldwide, which makes her the highest grossing female box office star of all time.

Scarlett has also been a singer, a model and a philanthropist.

She is a sex symbol. That is her public image. She has been turned down for being “too sexy” for parts. She doesn’t like being sexualized, but she does find it flattering.

SCARLETT’S WORKOUT GOALS

Ms. Johansson strives for these fitness goals:

  • Athletic performance
  • Foundational strength training
  • Functional hypertrophy (building muscles)
  • Metabolic work

She is no sissy. She likes Olympic weight lifting, powerlifting, kettlebells, bodyweight workouts and general conditioning.

Her workouts are performance based, at times to prepare for a movie part or stunt. When she’s filming, Scarlett will start every day with a workout. Her intensity varies and she knows the importance of rest and recovery.

Scarlett is known for taking on roles that are very demanding physically, such as Black Widow. She needs the strength and conditioning, since many of her most active scenes will require several takes.

Scarlett does a 245 pound deadlift, pull-ups. single leg pistol squats and push-ups with a 45 pound plate on her back. She is not too concerned with weight loss or body fat percentage. Her concerns are performance and the fit of her costume.

She says “It’s hard to fit everything in when you try to balance motherhood, training and work”. Generally, Scarlett does hourlong sessions 4-5 days each week. She starts at 6:00 AM, before her daughter wakes up. She likes to do explosive plyometric training – jumping up on boxes.

For variety, Scarlett does hot yoga, fight training and Pilates. She sprints, does battle ropes and loves kettlebells.

SCARLETT’S DIET

Scarlett cycles through days of high carbohydrates / low fat and low carbohydrates / high fat (with lots of protein).

Her daily diet is “mostly vegan”. She likes oatmeal, fresh fruits, veggies, salads, lean protein and smaller meals several times a day. She has been known to eat chicken wings. See below.

Scarlett eating chicken wings and being cute.

Scarlett does intermittent fasting for 12-15 hours per day, along with her workouts. This doesn’t seem like a long fast (I do 16-18 hours), but her fasting is in conjunction with preparation for stunt-heavy movie roles.

HER SKIN CARE

Scarlett has launched a skin care company, called The Outset. The products have been in development for three years. I will show links to them in my paragraph for “equipment”.

Here is a series of questions and answers that reveal a few of Scarlett’s beauty secrets and personal habits.

What does your morning routine look like when you wake up? I wake up and check my phone right away – wish I didn’t. Then I drink a glass of water, brush my teeth, wash my face with The Outset Micellar Cleanser, apply our Firming Vegan Collagen Prep Serum and Daily Moisturizer, and then I go wake up my daughter for school.

What time is that? 6:45.

Do you shower in the AM? Late morning.

What do you use in the shower? I recently rediscovered Biolage for my hair – it’s just as good as it was in high school – and I use Molton Brown Coastal Cypress & Sea Fennel Body Wash

What do you put on your face, skin care products and make-up? I have been using The Outset skin care for three years now and I’m addicted to our three-step daily regimen. For make-up, I use Givenchy Concealer Pen, a MAC brow gel and pencil, Pat McGrath mascara and a Laura Mercier blush and lip balm.

What are you eating for lunch? I work out and then eat lunch, and I keep it simple, like an egg wrap or turkey sandwich.

Do you take any supplements? I just started because I noticed that overall I was depleted, likely as a result of breastfeeding, so I now take vitamins C and D, calcium, magnesium, B-complex and Omega 3s.

What beauty products do you keep in your car or in your purse while on the go? Samples of The Outset Moisturizer and Prep Serum, Purel, hand cream, and lip balm. I am in New York and it is so dry here right now.

What does your nighttime skin routine look like? I wash my face with The Outset Micellar Cleaner and then apply our Niacinamide Night Cream. That’s it. Simple.

How do you take off your makeup? I wash my face every night. It was something my mother instilled in me. I use our Gentle Micellar Antioxidant Cleanser.

Do you use any treatments, like a face mask or tool? I really don’t. I have spent so much time in the makeup chair and having people touch my face that I prefer to just let it be.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Scarlett has worked diligently since her pre teen years to attain her success. Her physical roles, such as Black Widow, have placed demands on her body and she has been up to the challenge.

Yes, she has personal trainers, as do all of the actresses that I have researched. But she has done the work, as have Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez and others.

The same lady that promotes skin care does push-ups with a 45 pound weight on her back. She is a sex symbol for sure, but what’s wrong with that?

Please leave me any comments or questions in the “Comments” section below.

Be well!

Richard
