SOME HISTORY
Founded in 1948 by 18 year old Richard Stack, Dick’s Sporting Goods has grown from a simple bait and tackle shop to the largest sporting goods retailer in the United States. With a $300 loan from his grandmother, Dick Stack laid the foundation for a company that would become synonymous with sports, outdoor activities and community involvement.
The rise to prominence . Dick’s Sporting Goods’ journey began in Binghamton, New York and through hard work and strategic expansion, it has established a robust presence across the United States. As of 2024, the company boasts approximately 853 stores and employs over 55,000 people. Under the leadership of Lauren Hobart, the first female CEO of the company, DSG continues to innovate and expand its reach.
Dominating the market. The company’s dominance in the sporting goods market is evident in its financial success and market share. Controlling an estimated 14.2% of the market, DSG has shown remarkable resilience and growth, especially during challenging economic times. Its strategic partnerships with top brands and expansion of private label brands have further solidified its position as a market leader.
My involvement. I have been a loyal customer of DSG for several decades. I am now happy to see their Online sales increasing annually since 2017. It is much easier for me to go to their website and quickly view their entire inventory, including many discounts that they present to us weekly. Commitment to charity and community. Beyond its commercial success, DSG is deeply committed to charity and community outreach. The company’s founder believed in the power of sports to teach valuable life lessons. This philosophy continues. The company has provided over $13.5 million in grants to youth sports leagues and public school athletic programs, impacting over 500,000 young athletes. Their “75 for 75” program offered 75 grants of $75,000 to under- resourced youth sports programs,
