HEAT ISSUES

I saw my excellent Sports Medicine doctor this morning, Dr. Thomas Thekkekandam. He agreed that I could use his television interviews on my blog. I found one that addressed heat. This may relate more specifically to outdoor activity, but it is important to be aware of the consequences of too much heat in any environment. These precautions could prevent serious illness or even death.

Dr. Thekkekandam has been of service to me for medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow), knee aspirations, treatment for rotator cuff sprain, custom orthotics (since one of my legs is slightly shorter than the other) and continual finger injections to treat “trigger finger” or arthritis in all my fingers.

I recall an occasion when I was playing in a tennis tournament at 100 plus degrees. After the match, I found that my fingers and toes were  moving uncontrollably and that my calves were aching and cramping. Someone offered me a banana and this helped relieve the heat cramps temporarily (until I could find more bananas and thus more potassium). Looking back, I must have been experiencing not only heat cramps, but most likely heat exhaustion also, since nausea and delirium were present.
