I am a fit senior with a background in amateur sports and resistance exercise. It is difficult for me to remember a time when I was not involved in physical activity. My fitness odyssey has not been a straight line, as you will see in the next paragraph. To all those who are dealing with unwanted weight gain, less than perfect bodies or varying motivation: I can relate. I have been there.
UPS AND DOWNS
As a 24 year old army lieutenant, I was 6′ tall and weighed 195. (I had to check my military I.D.). I am now 5’10” and weigh 184. But this was a circuitous journey. At various times in my 40s and 50s, I weighed up to 240 pounds….and then I stopped getting on scales! Playing competitive tennis at 230+ pounds did a number on my knees and back, but I shudder to think about my girth if I HAD NOT played tennis on a regular basis.
My confirmed attitude at this point is that fitness and health can never be taken for granted, that nothing of worth comes without discipline and work.
MY PERSPECTIVE
It seems to me that to struggle with an issue and then find a resolution is to be better able to render advice, at least to those who might be dealing with that same issue. I am in North Carolina, where we love college basketball. The late Dean Smith and Mike Krzyzewski are revered as great coaches, which is an understatement. In neither case did basketball come easy to these Hall of Fame coaches. They were not superstars as players. My point is that to struggle and learn through applied discipline is to build a foundation of credibility.
THE GOAL OF MY SITE
is to provide information and inspiration to those who value fitness, strength and a healthy lifestyle. This is especially directed to seniors, though I will not presume to define a senior. George Bernard Shaw said “We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing”.
.
All the best,
Richard
